2026 is Poised to Be Hailed as the Age of the Croaking Craze.

Although I thoroughly enjoyed the recent Day of the Devs showcase was undoubtedly entertaining, my biggest takeaway was perhaps unexpected: I am declaring that 2026 will be the definitive year for frogs in video games.

A surprising total of five of the featured titles—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—in some way feature these amphibious creatures. Considering a collection of frogs is known as an army, it appears they are launching an invasion.

The Enduring Appeal of Amphibians

Frogs are far from new to the world of games. Ever since the era of Frogger to the coveted froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have long held a cult following. Yet, their popularity has markedly increased in recent times.

A quick search for "frog game" on Steam unveils an absolute deluge of results. Although, some of these are novelty titles, a significant portion are serious titles centered on frogs.

A Data-Driven Dive

To quantify this trend, I performed a thorough analysis into the last half-decade of hoppy gaming on Steam. My approach was based on clear indicators, focusing on games with frogs in the title or prominently displayed in screenshots.

The findings tell a compelling story: a steady increase from under 20 titles in 2020 to almost 60 in 2025.

This dramatic growth prompts the question: where is this interest coming from? The creature's rising status in the public consciousness is partially evident elsewhere, for example the popularity of Frog and Toad as nostalgic figures. But, the trend in gaming seems particularly strong.

The Allure of Amphibian Mechanics

Honestly, this is a movement I can fully endorse. Frogs offer built-in design advantages for game developers.

  • Charming Creatures: They are incredibly easy to be designed as quirky characters that often become a standout feature in any game.
  • Unique Gameplay: Their elastic legs and grappling abilities facilitate a host of innovative control schemes.

Many of the featured titles clearly utilize these traits. For instance the tongue-swinging in Big Hops and the elasticity-based puzzles of Stretchmancer.

What the Future Holds

So, what is the outlook for 2026? With five frog games confirmed for release before the year has even started—and the potential for more—the stage is set for it to be the largest year yet.

When these games are received positively—and historically, games from this showcase tend to succeed—we could very well be witnessing a genuine amphibian entertainment revival.
